Question

Public perception often becomes the gateway to innovation and change. Therefore, and seemingly more now than ever, the media, private companies, and even public organizations may present information that contains political agendas, slanted/biased viewpoints, misleading statistics, or even blatant propaganda, in an effort either to influence popular opinion, or to further bolster the conventional beliefs and convictions of their target audience.

View “TEDTalks: Al Gore-New Thinking on the Climate Crisis,” and read “Pollution,” located within the required readings.

How would you classify these articles-are they creditable, factual, unbiased, etc., and why or why not? How could these environmental articles be used positively and negatively? Make sure your reasoning and examples differ from those that have already been posted.

Explanation / Answer

Since you have not attached the "Pollution" reading material with you question, it will be hard for me to comment on it. I have watched Al Gore's Tedtalk video though. I'm here answering your question with a general flavor and not commenting on a particular video or reading material . Your answer or views to this question might be different from mine.

I feel most of the reports publisdhed in media or talks given by socialists and politicians (I'm not talking about the seminars given by scientists and subject experts) have some degree of credibity to them as often they are based on some factoids or data available in public domain. However, we can also call them half truth as these talks generally lack full interpretation of the data. Also, these media articles generally lack viable solution to a global problem, and if a solution is presented it lacks any discussion of the far reaching effects of that solution on different economies, geographical locations etc.The other issue with these media materials and talks is they often sound promoting their side of the problem only, which for a broader audience looks unfair and to people with a talk on the subject looks biased.

However, these talks and media reports definitely raise a real concern or alarm the public about an issue which might not be so obvious to them. Pollution, global warming, exhaustion of fossil are not such an obvious problem to a common man but all of us certainly bear the effects of these problems on a daily basis. These articles can go a long way in making common man aware of problems of global scale if more household examples are incorporated in them. These articles should not just be used to scare people but a full picture should be presented to them.
