Question
How would I approach an orbit problem that a satellite orbits an asteroid instead of a planet?
The satellite will start from rest on a horizontal runway 10m off the ground, get up to speed, and begin orbiting when when the runway ends.
Questions:
What is the magnitude of the gravitational force acting on the satellite when it is of the runway?
If the coefficient of friction between the runway and tires is, u, max acceleration?
How far will the satellite have to drive to reach its speed of 1.7m/s if it accelerates at this max rate?
Will thus speed actually put the satellite into an elliptical orbit above the asteroids surface?
Explanation / Answer
F= gravitational force = GM*m/(R+10)^2
a =maximum acceleration = u*F/m = GM*U/(R+10)^2
distance = V^2/(2*a) = 2.89*(R+10)^2/(2*G*M)
