Question

a) What is the acceleration of the person after leaving the cliff (x and y components)?

b) Calculate the time it takes the person to hit the water.

c) Calculate the horizontal displacement of the person from leaving the cliff to hitting the water.

d) Calculate the velocity (x and y components) of the person just before impact.

e) Calculate the velocity (magnitude and direction) of the person just before impact.

I've figured out b) t = 1.75 s and c) displacement = 17.5 m

but I'm not sure how to figure out a), d), and e).

Is acceleration 9.8 m/s^2 or do I plug the answers in from b and c into the acceleration formula? (a = deltax/t^2)

I'm lost for parts d) and e)

Explanation / Answer

a) ax = 0

ay = -9.81

b) y = y0 + v0y t + 1/2 a t^2
0 = 15 - 0.5*9.81*t^2
t=1.7487 s

c) x = x0 + v0x t

x = 10*1.7487 = 17.487 m

d) vx = 10
vy = -9.81*1.7487=-17.155 m/s

e) mag = sqrt(10^2 + 17.155^2)=19.857 m/s
direciton = arctan( 17.155/10)=59.76 degrees below horizontal
