Question

A uniform electric field of magnitude 656 N/C exists between two parallel plates that are 4.36 cm apart. A proton is released from rest at the positive plate at the same instant an electron is released from rest at the negative plate.

A uniform electric field of magnitude 656 N/C exists between two parallel plates that are 4.36 cm apart. A proton is released from rest at the positive plate at the same instant an electron is released from rest at the negative plate. Determine the distance from the positive plate at which the two pass each other. Ignore the electrical attraction between the proton and electron. Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to round off error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error. m Repeat part (a) for a sodium ion (Na+) and a chloride ion (Cl?).

Explanation / Answer

Sure. F=ma so find the force on each using their charge (the same except for the sign) for a proton and an electron. Then find the acceleration which will be about 1/1836 as I recall for the proton, as it weighs 1836 times an electron. Then set up equations for distance travelled versus time, a la distance = 1/2at^2 using the accelerations of each, and find how long to the point and where they cross.
Same for the Na+ and Cl- for charge, but the masses are different and much more similar, so close to the center.
