A sling is being roatated in a plane parallel to the ground. The sling is a 1.2m rope with a stone attached to the end. The circle it traces out is at the person's head height, 1.7m above the ground.

A. If the person can generate an acceleration of up to 60m/s^2, what is the maximum tagential velocity they can give to the stone?

B. If the stone is released moving horizontally at the speed found in part A, how far from the person's feet will it land?

Please explain what equations to use and how to use them.

Explanation / Answer

A. centripital acc. a :

a   = v^2/r  

60 = v^2 / 1.2

v = 8.48 m/s


B. so in vertical , stone have to trave 1.7 m .

using newton's 2 nd eqtn : H = ut + at^2/2

initial vertical component of velocity is zero.

1.7 = 0 x t   + 9.8 x t^2/2

t = 0.589 sec

but it have a horizontal velocity iof 8.48 m/s.

so in time 0.589 it will travel   d   = vt = 0.589 x 8.48 = 5m


so from person's feet = 1.2 + 5 = 6.2 m
