Question

The 'net force' in the statements below is the sum of ALL forces acting on the body.
TrueFalse If two objects are under the influence of equal forces, they have the same acceleration.
TrueFalse If a net force acts on an object, the object's velocity will change.
TrueFalse The net force which acts on an object which maintains a constant velocity is zero.
TrueFalse In order not to slow down, a truck moving at a constant velocity needs a small net force applied.
TrueFalse If an object's speed does not change, no net force is acting on the object.
TrueFalse During the collision of a locomotive with a car, the car exerts an equal size force on the locomotive as the locomotive exerts on the car.

I'm not sure why this is incorrect but if there is someone helpful that can explain this please??

Explanation / Answer

1. Force = mass * acceleration

If the mass of the two objects are different, the the acceleration will also be different.

2. Newtons first law. If a net force (non zero ) acts on an object it will undergo a change in velocity. The key thing to note here is that if the net force turns out to be zero, in that case there will be no velocity change.

3. acceleration is the derivative of velocity, If velocity isconstant that means the acceleration is zero. Which means the force acting on it is zero.

4.Yes this is to account for friction and the backward force that it applies on the body.

5. If an object speed does not change, the net force acting is zero. But it may simply all the forces are cancelling each other out.

6. The force exerted by a body depends on it acceleration and mass. The locomotive has higher acceleration than the car and heavier mass so the locomotive more force on the car. Note Newton's third law cannot be applied here as the car is not static and bound.
