Question

Essay (5 points): Before answering, read all of the parts below so you can follow directions. Regarding "Population Growth& Regulation" 2) Then in a 1st paragraph, discuss using 1) On the figure to the right, draw&label; the 2 curves & label the dashed line. terminology the means of additions & subtractions to a population. 3) In a 2nd paragraph, discuss the concept(s) illustrated by the figure and your curves. 4) Finally, in the form of 2 labeled list, identify the 2 groups that organisms can be placed in based on their typical form of population growth & regulation. Under each label give typical characteristics that define each group&then; give example organisms for each group. Grading will be based on following instruction, use of terminology and completeness of discussion Time

Explanation / Answer

1. The two curves will be

i. J- shaped curve for the small population

ii. S- curve for the large population.

The dotted horizontal line will be K= environmental resistance.

2. Additions to the population

i. Birth rate: Birth rate or batality is number of live births per thousand of population per year.

ii. Immigration: It is the number of people which come permanently to a population

Substraction from the population:

i. Death rate: The number of deaths per 1000 of population per year.

ii. Emigration: Number of people who leave permanently from a population and join another country.

Growth rate of population is birth rate - death rate.

If N is the population density at time t, then its density at time t+1 is

Nt+1 = Nt + ((B+I) - (D+E))

3. In 'J' shaped curve of population in a small population the shape of the curve is J-shaped as it contains only the log phase and and exponential phase. The curve keeps growing as there is no environemntal resistance to it.

In S- shaped curve which is known as sigmoid growth curve, has log phase, exponential phase and stationary phase. In log phase, there is preparation for growth, in exponential phase there is rapid growth of population and in stationary phase the curve becomes parallel to the base line as the growth becomes stationary due to environemntal resistance in a large population.

4. J-shaped curve S- shaped curve

i. No environmental resistance i. There is environmental resistance

ii. only log phase and exponential phase ii. it has log phase, exponential phase, stationary phase.

ex: bacterial growth in a culture medium ex: human population
