Question

Two objects (m1 = 5.25 kg and m2 = 2.80 kg) are connected by a light string passing over a light, frictionless pulley as in the figure below. The 5.25-kg object is released from rest at a point h = 4.00 m above the table.

Two objects (m1 = 5.25 kg and m2 = 2.80 kg) are connected by a light string passing over a light, frictionless pulley as in the figure below. The 5.25-kg object is released from rest at a point h = 4.00 m above the table. Determine the speed of each object when the two pass each other. Determine the speed of each object at the moment the 5.25-kg object hits the table. How much higher does the 2.80-kg object travel after the 5.25-kg object hits the table?

Explanation / Answer

accelaration a = (m1-m2)*g / (m1+m2) = (5.25-2.8)*9.8/(5.25+2.8)
a= 2.982 m/s^2

a) V^2-u^2 =2*a*s
V = sqrt(2*2.982*2)= v m/s
b) v1 = sqrt(2*2.982*4) = 4.884m/s
V2 = 4.884 m/s

c) h = 4 m
