Question
A spherical shell 33cm in diameter carries a total charge of 88?C distributed uniformly over its surface. A 3.5?C point charge is located at the center of the shell.
What is the electric field strength 8.0cm from the center?
E1=_______N/C
What is the electric field strength 51cm from the center?
E2=_______N/C
How would your answer in part (A) change if the charge on the shell were doubled?
E3=_______N/C
How would your answer in part (B) change if the charge on the shell were doubled?
E4=_______N/C
Must answer all!
Explanation / Answer
E1 at 8cm from centre is just due to charge at the centre = Kq/r^2
E1 = 9e9 * 3.5uC/0.08^2
E1=4.921*10^6 N/C
E2 at 51cm means it is completely outside the sphere, so total charge Q = 88+3.5 = 91.5 uC
E2 = 9e9*91.5uC/0.51^2
E2 = 3.166*10^6 N/C
E3, since E is directly prop to charge Q, if Q doubles , E also doubles
i.s E3= k(2Q/r^2) = 2* 9e9 * 3.5uC/0.08^2 = 9.842 *10^6 N/C
E4, here total charge becomes Q = 88+7 = 179.5 uC
E4 = KQ/r^2 = 9e9* 179.5uC/0.51^2 = 6.211 *10^6 N/C
