Question

In the figure, three uniform thin rods, each of length L = 49 cm, form an inverted U. The vertical rods each have a mass of 20 g; the horizontal rod has a mass of 31 g. What are (a) the x coordinate and (b) the y coordinate of the system's center of mass? (Give your answer in cm)

Explanation / Answer

x- cm = m1x1 + m2x2 + m3x3 / (m1 + m2 +m3)

             = 20 x 0 + 31 x 49/2 + 20 x 49 / (20 +20+31)

               = 24.5 cm    ( from left vertical rod )

b) ycm = y1m1 + y2m2 +y3m3 / (m1 +m2+m3)

       = 49 x 20/2 + 31 x0 + 49 x20/2 / (20 +20 +31)

           = 13.80 cm ( from horizontakl rod)
