Question
Can you Identify the different parts of your microstructure? That is, Identify the Al dendrites and the eutectic. Can you observe the lamellae in the optical microscope?
Picture 1 is 100% Al, picture 2 is 95% Al, 5% Si, and picture 3 is 91% Al, and 9% Si. The dendrites in picture three are obvious as the tree like structures, for picture 2 (my sample), I said that the eutectic can be seen as the light and dark material around the veins and dendrites are beginning to form (the veins) but are very skinny and undefined in nature. Please clarify if this is true? Also I do not observe any lamellae in our picture 2, but it is apparent in picture 3. Please clarify my understanding of this subject if I am wrong.
Explanation / Answer
Yes your observation is true in this case. This is so because by oserving the pictures we are able to differentiate in the proportion of the different atoms which is present in the dendrites. Lamella basically refers to the thin layer of membrane made up of tissue. This thin layer of tissue could be made up of any organic material. In picture 2 light boundaries of the cells are present but it is not so prominent in comparison with picture 3. Picture 3 gives a prominent view of lamella of the cell.
