Help with writing a hypothesis for a microbiology unkown assignments:

"An unknown bacterial sample was isolated from an infected burn wound on a patient in the hospital."

Some have tried to hypothesize which bacteria (from the list of possible bacteria in your procedure) you have isolated from the wound. You can draw your hypothesis by doing background information on likely pathogens infecting burn wounds. Other students have tried to hypothesize the characteristics of the bacteria (from the ones on the flow chart) based on the fact that the sample was isolated from a wound. Again, you can draw this hypothesis based on the characteristics of most pathogens that are able to infect wounds. Either of these are acceptable.

Explanation / Answer

The burn wound is a susceptible site for the opportunistic colonization by the organisms of both exogenous and endogenous origin. The likelihood of invasive burn wound infection determined by the sage, depth of burn, microbial infection, enzymes, types and number of organisms.

Both aerobic Gram-positive cocci and facultative and aerobic Gram-negative bacilli can be isolated in the culture of burn wound. Some pathogens are acquired from the hospital which are antibiotic resistance and some commonly occur which are antibiotic susceptible. Later one can be treated but antibiotic resistant organisms are difficult to manage.

Resistant Gram negative bacteria are the most common isolated associated with the burn wounds and there is the need of careful selection of antibiotics to control the infection of burn wound in order to help reduce mortality and morbidity.
