Question
A bat strikes a 0.145-kg baseball. Just before impact, the ball is traveling horizontally to the right at a speed of 55.0 m/s, and it leaves the bat traveling to the left at an angle of 35 degrees above horizontal with a speed of 55.0 m/s. The ball and bat are in contact for 1.85 ms.Part A
Find the horizontal component of the average force on the ball. Take the x-direction to be positive to the right.
Part B
Find the vertical component of the average force on the ball. The positive y-axis points upwards.
Explanation / Answer
-49.15=50+a(0.00165) This gave me an acceleration of -60090.909. Multiplying by the mass of 0.145 I get 8713.1818 which to two significant figures is 8700 N for Fx. This answer was correct. Now when I move on to Fy, I do basically the same thing: 34.4146 (vertical component of velocity) = 0 + a (0.00165) a= -20857.33 Fy= (-20857.33)(.145) Fy= - -1438 (sig figs)
