Question

A wagon is rolling forward on level ground. Friction is negligible. The person sitting in the wagon is holding a rock. The total mass of the wagon, rider, and rock is 98 kg. The mass of the rock is 0.33 kg. Initially the wagon is rolling forward at a speed of 0.48 m/s. Then the person throws the rock with a speed of 17 m/s. Both speeds are relative to the ground. Find the speed of the wagon after the rock is thrown (a) directly forward in one case and (b) directly backward in another. Oh and to whoever answers this, could you please divide the question into different parts, so you'd make a column for part A) along with the work for it. and do the same thing for part B). for some reason people have just done done the last part and didn't show the work for either parts.

Explanation / Answer

1/2mv^2 .5*.33*17^2 = 47.685J now 47.685 = 1/2mv^2 47.685 = 1/2*97.63*v^2 v = 0.98 this would increase .98 m/s in .48 m/s v = 1.468
