Question
In the following figure(Figure 1) the battery has emf 25.0V and negligible internal resistance. R1= 3.90ohms. The current through R1 is 1.80A and the current through R3= 4.40A .
What are the resistances R2 and R3?
I cant figure out how get the image to upload properly. But the 3 resistors R1, R2, R3 are in parallel.
I am completely lost, I don't know why they give me the ohms and amps for R1 and nothing for R2. If any body has any sort of hints or help toward this problem I would be very grateful.
Explanation / Answer
There is some mistake in your problem, or wrong interpretation of figure.. Because, if all resistors are in parallel, voltage across all resistors is same i.e V volts.. Then Current through a particular resistor is I = V/R.. But you've given that the current through R1 is 1.80A, which is not equal to 25 V/3.9 ohm.. Remember these while solving.. 1) IF ALL RESISTORS ARE IN PARALLEL, VOLTAGE ACROSS ALL RESISTORS IS SAME I.E 'V' VOLTS and THE CURRENT THROUGH A PARTICULAR RESISTOR IS I = V/R. 2) RESULTANT CURRENT FROM SOURCE = SUM OF ALL INDIVIDUAL CURRENTS THROUGH RESISTORS. If you can send me the figure and exact problem to my mail or give a link in comment, I can SURELY give you the solution.. THANK YOU...
