Question

A car of mass 1200 kg is traveling east at a speed of 28.0 m/s. The driver is busy texting and doesn't notice the red light ahead. He enters the intersection and collides with a truck of mass 3800 kg that was moving north at a speed of 21.0 m/s. The vehicles remain smashed together and slide to a stop. Find (a) the velocity (magnitude and direction) of the vehicles immediately after the collision and (b) the coefficient of kinetic friction between the vehicles and the road, if they skid for 23.0 meters.

Explanation / Answer

initial momentum of the car = 1200 * 28 = 33600 kg m/s (i) initial momentum of the truck = 3800 * 21 = 79800 kg m/s (j) so, initial momentum of the system = 33600 kg m/s (i) + 79800 kg m/s (j) after collision , mass of system = 1200 + 3800 = 5000 kg momentum remains conserved , so, 5000 * v = 33600 kg m/s (i) + 79800 kg m/s (j) v = 6.72 m/s (i) + 15.96 (j) magnitude of velocity = ( sqrt ( 6.72^2 + 15.96^2 ) = 17.32 m/s direction = tan_inverse ( 15.96/6.72)= 67.166 from the initial direction of car .
