Question
In each of the above diagrams, there are four point masses with coordinates labeled as (x,y) and in units of meters. In diagram A, what are the values of (a) ? and (b) ? for the center of mass of the objects to be at (0,0)? In diagram B, what are the values of (c) ? and (d) ? for the center of mass of the objects to be at (0,0)?
Explanation / Answer
Let center of mass of objects in diagram A be (xA , yA) which is (0 , 0)............... so we have xA = 0 = (-5*4 + 0*1 + 0*3 + a*5) / (4 + 1 + 3 + 5 ) ..........which gives 'a' = 4.00......... similarly yA = 0= (0*4 + 0*1 + -4*3 + b*5) / (4 + 1 + 3 + 5).............gives 'b' = 2.40.................. in a similar way......for diagram B ....... xB = 0 = (-4*3 + 0*2 + 0*6 + c*5) / (3 + 2 + 6 + 5) ...........==> 'c' = 2.40........... yB = 0 = (0*3 + 1*2 + -5*6 + d*5) / (3+ 2 + 6 + 5)....................==> 'd' = 5.60 ................ so (a, b) = (4.00, 2.40) and (c, d) = (2.40, 5.60 )
