Question
Two identical steel balls, each of mass 3.6 kg, are suspended from strings of length 29 cm so that they touch when in their equilibrium position. We pull one of the balls back until its string makes an angle theta = 37o with the vertical and let it go. It collides elastically with the other ball. How high will the other ball rise above its starting point? http://capa-new.colorado.edu/teacher/capalibrary/Graphics/Gtype18/prob01a.gif I think I am about to drop this class I cannot figure problems like this out please help! Let me know if the link doesnt work
Explanation / Answer
from Conservation of momentum : we get , h2 = L(1 - cosT) (standard equation) = 29 (1 - cos(37deg)) = 5.84 cm
