Question

Please note, 950 kN, 950.03 kN, 95 kN and 95.03 kN are not the answer.

A bullet of mass 7.30 Times 10-3 kg, moving at 1350 m/s impacts a tree stump and penetrates 7.00 cm into the wood before coming to rest. (Take the direction of the bullet to be in the positive direction.) Assuming that the acceleration of the bullet is constant, find the force (including direction) exerted by the wood on the bullet. If the same force acted on the bullet and it had the same impact speed but half the mass, how far would it penetrate into the wood? Kinematics can be used to find an expression for the acceleration of the bullet. Newton's second law can then be used to relate the stopping force to the bullet's mass and displacement.

Explanation / Answer

vf2=v02+2ax solve for a: (vf2-v02)/(2x)=a and F=ma so F=m((vf2-v02)/(2x)) m=7.30(10-3)kg

vf=0(m/s), v0=1350(m/s), x=.07m

F=(7.30(10-3))((-(1350)2)/(2(.07)))=-95030N or -95.03kN or using 3 significant figures -95kN
