help

You make a plot of distance vs. time as shown in the figure below: Looking at graph #1, is the slope increasing, decreasing or constant? What is the meaning of the slope? What is the acceleration? Looking at the middle part of graph #2, what can you say about the slope? How much is the velocity and acceleration? Looking at the end part of graph #2, what can you say about the slope? How much is the velocity and acceleration? How do you find the slope on a graph? What are the units of the slope?

Explanation / Answer

1) Slope is constant.

Slope is the ratio of small increase in y to small increase in x i.e y/x which is velocity in this case.

Acceleration is 0.

2)Slope is 0 as y doesnot change with change in x i.e y/x is 0.

since the distance is ramaining constant....the object is not moving...hence both velocity and acceleration are 0.

3)As distance decreases with time the slope is negative and constant .....given by D/t at any time.

Since distance is uniformly decreasing D/t is constant and therefore velocity is constant.

Acceleration is 0

4)Slope = y/x at any point on the curve. Slope is a numerical quantity ans has no units.
