Question
A block sldes on a semicircular fricitonless track as shown. a) If it starts from rest at point A, what is its speed when it reaches the bottom of the track at point B? b) What force does the track exert on the block when it passes through point B if the block's mass is 1.00 kg?

A block sldes on a semicircular frictionless track as shown. a) If it starts from rest at point A, what is its speed when it reaches the bottom of the track at point B? b) What force does the track exert on the block when it passes through point B if the block's mass is 1.00 kg?Explanation / Answer
a) conservation of energy
m g h = 1/2 mv^2
v = sqrt(2 g h) = sqrt(2*9.81*1)=4.43 m/s
b) since moving in a circle a = v^2/r
so N - mg = m v^2/r
N = mg + mv^2/r = 1*9.81 + 1*4.43^2/1=29.4 N
