A simple camera telephoto lens consists of two individual lenses. The objective has a focal length f1 = + 37.0 cm. Exactly 35.0 cm behind this lens there is a concave lens with a focal length of f2 = - 10.0 cm. The object to be photographed is 4.0 m in front of the objective. What is the magnification of the lens combination?

Explanation / Answer

u1 = -400 cm , f1 = 37.0cm,

so 1/v1 + 1/400 = 1/37.0. this gives v1 = 40.77 cm

so u2 = - (40.77-35.0) = - 5.77 cm (please note that the object for second lens is to its right)

so v2 = -3.659cm

the film should be 3.659 cm from concave lens

linear magnification = m1 * m2 = - 40.77/-400 * -3.659/-5.77 = 0.0646
