Question
Not too sure how to calculate the instantaneous MPG
(a) Understand the problem: For testing purposes, we will assume we can get data from the on-board computer in a file format consiting of a milage value (from the odometer) and a gallons of gas consumed value (measure by the fuel injectors) at regular intervals, say every 5 seconds. An example file might look like 0.0016 0.0016 0.0019 0.0020 0.0020 0.0024 0.0027 60257.45 60257.50 60257.55 60257.61 60257.67 60257.74 60257.82 With the above data, the program should produce the output: Instantaneous MPG = 31.25 Instantaneous MPG = 26.32 Instantaneous MPG = 30.00 Instantaneous MPG = 30.00 Instantaneous MPG = 29.17 Instantaneous MPG 2963 For 6 readings, average MPG = 29.37 (b) (10 Points). Do a hand example: Use your calculator to show how to compute the first TWO lines of the above output. (results within +/- 0.01 are sufficuent)Explanation / Answer
MPG means miles per gallons.
Instantaneous MPG = (60257.50 - 60257.45)/ 0.0016 = 31.25
Instantaneous MPG = (60257.55 - 60257.50)/ 0.0019 = 26.315
Instantaneous MPG = (60257.61 - 60257.55)/ 0.0020 = 30.00
Instantaneous MPG = (60257.74 - 60257.67)/ 0.0024 = 29.166
Instantaneous MPG = (60257.82 - 60257.74)/ 0.0027 = 29.629
