Question

The three charges are held in place in the figure below, where L = 1.10 m.

The three charges are held in place in the figure below, where L = 1.10 m. Find the electric potential at point P. Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error. Suppose that a fourth charge, with a charge of 6.19 mu C and a mass of 4.71 g, is released from rest at point P. What is the speed of the fourth charge when it has moved infinitely far away from the other three charges?

Explanation / Answer

a) V = k*?q/r = 9.0x10^9*(2.75x10^-6/(1.10/2) + (-1.72)x10^-6/(1.10/2) + 7.45x10^-6/(1.10*sin(60))

= 87.19 kV

b) U = V*q = 87190*6.19x10^-6 = 0.54J

So at infinity K = 0.54J

since K = 1/2*m*v^2

then v = sqrt(2*0.563/m) = sqrt(2*0.54/4.71x10^-3) = 15.198m/s
