Question

The 2.0-m-long, 15kg beam in (Figure 1) is hinged at its left end. It is "falling" (rotating clockwise, under the influence of gravity), and the figure shows its position at three different times.

1)What is the gravitational torque on the beam about an axis through the hinged end when the beam is at the upper position?

2)What is the gravitational torque on the beam about an axis through the hinged end when the beam is at the middle position?

3)What is the gravitational torque on the beam about an axis through the hinged end when the beam is at the lower position?

I put 129,147,and 100 for each but it says those are wrong and says "Check the signs" my sign is Nm. I do not know why its wrong. Thank you.

2.0 m 20° 450

Explanation / Answer

toque T= force perpendicular distance

for steeel beam T1= mg* l/2   = 10427.2 N-m

for worker T2= mg*l = 2606.8 N-m

total torque T= 13034 N-m   (T1 + T2)
