Question
When an aqueous solution of hydroiodic acid, HI(aq), and an aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate, (NH42CO (aq), are combined, the gas carbon dioxide, CO2(g), is released from solution. Write a net ionic equation for this reaction. Represent hydroiodic acid in solution as H ions and I ions. (NH4COs exists in dissociated form in aqueous solution. Write the hydronium ion as H. Use the pull-down choices to specify states such as (aq) or (s). If a box is not needed leave it blank. Submit Answer Retry Entire Group 9 more group attempts remainingExplanation / Answer
a)
Net ionic equation is
CO32- (aq) + 2 H+ (aq)..................> CO2 (g) + H2O (l)
here HI is strong acid and ammonium carbonate is strong electrolyte. hence both are completely ionized in aqueous solution. I- and NH4+ are the spectator ions.
b)
BaSO3 (s) + 2 H+ (aq)..................> SO2 (g) + H2O (l) + Ba2+ (aq)
here I- is the spectator ion.
