Question

The plot will display the Energy Functional vs. Energy by default. Click the pull-down menu and go to Band Information. From the pull-down menu, now select Allowed Bands. This shows the Band Information graphically.

Looking at the Allowed Bands plot, what do the green lines and red lines represent?

Explanation / Answer

As far as functional energy Vs energy is concerned, red line at every band gap is outside of [-1,1], therefore from plot we can conclude that it is out of band, and green line which is inside the band of [-1,1] hence it is allowed signal.

From band information chart one thing is clear, when energy of the device is increasing then band gap is decreasing. If we compare this with semiconductor and conductor material then we can find that, when temperature increases semiconductor material bandgap decreases. Same thing happening with this plot as energy (eV) is increasing, which means green signal is also getting wider and at the same time band gap is decreasing due to increasing energy, same thing we can see from band information chart.
