156 EXERCISES IN PHYSICAL STRATIGRAPHY AND SEDIMENTOLOGY Exercise 6.3 Constroct a fence diagram from tbe following columas Does your three-dimensional correlation allow you to more accurately locate the source of coarse elastic sedimest than dimensional correlation from Chapter 2 (Exercise 2.2)7 What apparest direction material derived from? Where is the plays located in this "basin"? Where were the duses forming with respect to the other depositional envirommests? did your two- is this source 2 20m EOL?AN SANDSTONE COBBLE CONGLOMERATE FLUV?AL SANDSTONE DOLOMITE 1 TERRESTRIAL MUDSTONE ANHYDRITEExplanation / Answer
Source of clastic sediment - A clast is a fragment formed due to weathering process of other rocks. This term is used in case of sedimentry rocks these are made up of pieces of clasts or pre existing rocks. Pieces of rocks are loosened by weathering and then transported to basin. When the sediment is deeply buried, it becomes compacted or sedimented.
Direction - The particles that form the sedimentary rock by accumulating are called as sediment. These when undergo process of weathering result in clasts. The weatering process starts from source area and ends in the transportation tp place of deposition which is water, glacier, ice, etc.
Playa also called as pan, flat or dry lake found in ineterior area periodically covered by water. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind trail of salt, sand or mud through deposition by fitration process in the ground.
A despositional environment is a specific place where sediements are deposited which includes stream channel, lake or bottom of ocean. The layers of sediment that accumulate show features of sediments of dolomite being the lowest and eolin sanstone being the recent. Cross beds in particular region are formed by these sediments pilling up. in layers on slope of sedimetn ripples or dunes. Wind blown sediments are that are deposited in form of sand dunes lead in formation of long cross beds
