Question

Regarding plate boundaries: a. What are the 3 types? b. Give examples of each type. c. What are subdue ion zones and what can they create? d. What is the difference between the following 3 types of convergent boundaries? i. Continent-Ocean convergence leads to earthquakes and mountains along the coast, like the Andes in South America. ii. Ocean-ocean convergence leads to volcanic islands like Japan and the Aleutian islands. These are called island arcs. iii. Continent-continent convergence leads to tall mountain ranges like the Himalayas. 27. Know how each of the following places are created: a. Japan b. Himalayan Mountains & Tibetan Plateau c. Hawaii d. Aleutian Islands e. Andes Mountains 28. Know that the Pacific ocean is deepest and largest and has rim or "ring of fire". The Atlantic ocean is shallowest and second large. It has the mid Atlantic ridge. The Indian ocean is smallest and as deep as the Pacific. The Atlantic has shallow seas: Gulf of Mexico, Carbbem, Mediterranean.

Explanation / Answer

26) a) The three types of plate boundaries are 1) Divergent boundaries : the divergent boundaries are boundaries along which plates move away from eachother. 2) convergent boundaries : the convergent boundaries are boundaries along which two plates approach each other. 3) transform plate boundaries : these are boundaries along which plates slide past one another.

b) example of divergent boundaries : east African rift and valley , Red sea

example of convergent boundaries : Andes mountain range in south America, cascade mountains in Western United states.

example of transform boundaries : san Andreas fault in california.

c) subduction zones occur at the deep trenches.in which one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate. The dipping plate sins into the asthenosphere where lithosphere melts to produce magma. The plate edges will be destroyed.deep trenches will be formed.

d) the main difference is subduction

i) continent - ocean convergent : oceanic crust will be denser than continental crust so it subducts into the mantle leads to earthquakes.

ii)ocean ocean convergence: one oceanic crust will be denser than another hence one oceanic crust will be subducted.

iii) continental - continental convergence : No subduction occurs.

27) a) Japan is formed by ocean - ocean convergence

b) Himalayan ranges and Tibetan plateaus are formed by continent continent convergence

c)Hawaii islands are formed from volcanoes

d) Aleutian Islands are formed from oceanic - oceanic convergence

e) Andes Mountains are formed from continental - oceanic convergence
