Find Section 31 on the map (west of the highway, west center of the map). What are the highest and lowest elevations in this section?

Highest:

Lowest:

Approximately how many sinkholes are there in the 1 mi2section? ____________

Do any of these sinkholes have water in them (inferring that they must have impermeable soil or rock along their base)?

Describe any economic activity on the topo map (not just in Section 31), specific to the karst environment. (Use the list of topo map symbols below to help you).

This limestone region is deeply dissected by Salt Creek flowing along the east side of the map. The entrenched stream meanders east of Oolitic are remarkable in their geometric (rock-structure controlled) bends. Such an entrenched stream is important in the development of a karst region because it permits a continuous movement of water through the jointed limestone landscape. What is the local relief between the town and the creek? Examine the contour lines carefully, they are tightly spaced along the cliffs.

Lake Wales. This is also a topographic quadrangle map with a scale of 1:24,000 and a contour interval of 10 feet.

In Florida, several sinkholes have made news because lowered water tables (lowered by pumping) caused their collapse into underground solution caves, taking with them homes, businesses, and even new cars from an auto dealership. One such sinkhole collapsed in a suburban area in 1981, and others in 1993, 1998, and within the last few years. The area around Lake Wales, Florida (south of Orlando and north of the Everglades) is characteristic of limestone with karst topography, high water tables, some dry depressions, poor surface drainage, marsh lands, and groves of citrus trees.

Approximately how many sinkhole depressions contain lakes in the map segment? ___________

How many of these lakes sit in a depression about 10 ft. deep (give a count)? ________

How many of these lakes sit in a depression of more than 25 ft. deep? _________

Water will flow downslope between sinkholes. Using lake- and pond-surface elevation as an indicator, in which direction do you think groundwater flows through this area? Why?

There is a hospital shown south (SSE) of Lake Wales. Determine the elevation of the hospital and Lake Wales:

Hospital: _________________

Lake Wales (lake surface): ________________

If you were standing at the hospital could you see the entire lake? Explain.

How many dry depressions do you count in this topo map? _____________

These infer that the bottom of the sinkhole is permeable and cannot hold water permanently, or perhaps the water table lowered possibly due to groundwater mining. When the water table level is above the bottom of the sinkholes they fill with water.

Do you find any surface streams on the topo map? __________

Explain your observation – describe what the surface drainage is and what would produce this hydrologic situatiuation.

Explanation / Answer

Map 1-

Highest Elevation- 650

Lowest Elevation-550

No of sinkholes-45

Water in sinkholes- No water

Economiactivity- Yes mining activity can be identified (Limestone Query) indicated by mining symbol of crossed hammer and shovel

Joint relief is 100 ft

Map -2 Lake Wales

No of sinkholes with lakes 9

No of sinkholes with depression than 10 ft 9

No of sinkholes with more than 25 ft depression-5

Water will flow towards the center of the map as the contour value is high towards North and South and less in centre of the area.

Lake Wales elevation- 110, Hospital Elevation- 195Yes,

Yes, the hospital is situated at higer elevation and lake is on lower elevation that's why we can see entire lake.

Dry depression- 39

Yes surface stream found

Surfce drainage is the flow of water on the surface due to gradient and water will flow along the V shaped kinks in contour.
