Question

Suppose that a contaminant has been released from an industrial site to an unconfined aquifer. For the initial analysis of the problem you may assume that the release is essentially a point - source that was instantaneously introduced into the aquifer. The initial volume of water contaminated is estimated to be 100 m^3 and the initial concentration of this contaminated water is 1500mg/L. The average linear velocity of the groundwater is 5m/year, and the x, y, and z diaper sibilates are 5m, 1m and 1m, respectively. If the contaminant does not adsorb or degrade, where is the center of mass (relative to the initial spill site) after 10 years of transport? Estimate the size of the plume after 10 years of transport.

Explanation / Answer

a.If the contaminated does not adsorb or degrade, where is the centre of mass (relative to the initial spill site ) after 10 years of transport ?

If contaminate does not adsorb or degrade, the centre of mass (relative to the initial spill site) after 10 years transport is at 25 m from initial spill site.

Because the velocity of groundwater is 5m/year

In 10 years the groundwater will reach 50m distance with contamination

So the centre of the contamination is 25 m

b.Estimate the size of the plume after 10 years of transport ?

The linear velocity of the groundwater is 5m / year

The contamination which forms also flow in same spead of ground water

So in 10 years the distance travel of plume is = 10 x 5 = 50 m

The size of the plume it disperse in one year X, Y and Z directions is 5m, 1m and 1m respectively

So the size of the plume in 10 years = 5 x 10,          1 x 10, 1 x 10

                                                                    = 50m,          10m       10m
