Choose one Egyptian god/goddess (Amun, Anubis, Horus, Isis, Osiris, Ra/Re) or one Greek god/goddess (Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Dionysus, Hades, Hera, Hermes, Poseidon, Zeus). Conduct internet research to find out some information about that god/goddess, and then in your discussion board post, discuss the major aspects or characteristics that he or she is in charge of (wisdom, the sea, the sun, etc.) and any animals, plants, objects, or other items that are commonly associated with that god/goddess (eagles, crocodiles, olives, etc.). In addition, you may include a short mythological story involving that god/goddess.
Explanation / Answer
Horus was one of the most significant of the Egyptian gods. The word Horus originates from “Horu” meaning Falcon. He was considered as patron of Egypt and depicted as having Falcon head wearing red and white crown which is symbolic of his kingship over entire Egypt. Horus was son of Osiris and Isis. Horus was worshipped for major part of Egyptian history in different forms.
Horus was the god of the sky and thus he was known to contain both sun and moon. The right eye of Horus is sun while moon is said to be his left eye. Eye of Horus is representative of royal power and security. He was considered as a great warrior and hunter.
Set “Desert God” was the adversary of Horus who was defeated by Horus in a boat race. Horus boat which looks like stone was made of wood and Set’s boat was made of stone and it sank, and thus Horus becomes the king of Egypt.
