Weight is an important issue in the fertility. Underweight, obese, have the negative impact on the fertility. some of the conditions such as elevated BMI, undernutrition, stress, alcohol intake, poor health status diminish the reproductive capacity. The health of the mother is important to lead a healthy baby.

Most of the women of the reproductive age have BMI of 25 or higher. Ideal body weight is vital for increasing the chances of pregnancy. Reducing the weight on these women will show improved chances of pregnancy. The problem of immature ova in females and low sperm production in males results in infertility. The nutrition has a great impact on hormonal changes which affects the fertility rate. So focus on the nutritional status before conception is an essential goal of Healthy people 2020.

Intake of folate from dietary and supplements prior to conception reduces the chromosomal abnormalities (especially Neural tube Defects) in the growing fetus. Poor iron status of women is a common problem of women in the childbearing age. Alcohol, smoking, intake of caffeine affects the fertility by decreasing the estrogen and testosterone levels.

Preconception services focus on behaviors of women such as dietary status, alcohol intake, folate and iron status as well as the assessment of genetic traits. they also focus on psychological needs of the women as a part of conceptual care. They provide health care visits and educational sessions for the recommended women.
