The six standards of practice are:

1. Assessment

2. Diagnosis

3. Outcome identification

4. Planning

5. Implementation

6. Evaluation

Out of these six standards, implementation is very important while caring for the patient. Previously, the care of the patient only included the physician and the nurses. But now a days health has become holistic which includes all the other health care professionals while caring for the patient. The care not only stops within the walls of the hospital, but also it continues to the place of living. The nurse should execute the plan of care for the patient, coordinate with other professionals, provide a holistic care and provide health teaching about home care and take home messages.

Nowadays, nurses provide health teaching that address such topics as healthy lifestyles , risk reducing behaviors, developmental needs, activities of daily living, and preventive self-care. She uses health promotion and health teaching methods appropriate to the situation and the patient’s developmental level, learning needs , readiness, ability to learn , language preference , and culture. She seeks opportunities for feedback and evaluation of the effectiveness of the strategies used .

The following shows how the nursing practice differs. She synthesizes clinical data, theoretical frameworks, and evidence when providing consultation, facilitates the effectiveness of a consultation by involving the patient in decision-making and negotiating role responsibilities. She communicates consultation recommendations that facilitates change.

The nurse prescribes evidenced-based treatments , therapies, and procedures considering the patient’s comprehensive health care needs and pharmacological agents based on a current knowledge of pharmacology and physiology and based on clinical indicators, the patient’s status needs , and the results of diagnostic and laboratory tests.

She evaluates therapeutic and potential adverse effects and potential adverse effects of pharmacological and non pharmacological treatment, provides patients with information about intended effects and potential adverse effects of proposed prescriptive therapies. She provides information about costs, alternative treatments and procedures , as appropriate.
