A frame of reference of a listener or observer is an intangible network of expectations, assumptions, desires, interests and attitudes that interfere in the process of communication. Based on the frame of reference of a listener, the information that reaches a receiver is filtered and a meaning is created spontaneously. The common frames of reference that influence our interpretations of a message include our values, beliefs, memories, preferences, needs, etc.

One of the major functions of communication is linking the sender with a receiver. It is an important element in communication whose internal conditions are critical in the effectiveness of the communication. For example, a manager who assumed that instructing an employee with informal ways of communication can improve the productivity. This manager had the habit of calling his subordinates in their nick names and give instructions. A new employee who was unaware of the ways of the manager got offended by the greeting of the manager. The misunderstanding arose due to the mismatch of frame of reference. The new employee’s cultural upbringing guides that one should be formal in work situations and the superior person is expected to be strict and rigorous. The informal communication of the manager was interpreted as mocking at the new employee.

The same manager is effective with other employees using his informal ways of communication. The experienced employees are considering the manager to be friendly, because he does not give too much attachment to the positional status but focus on the works to be done.
