Question

1. Identify supermarket/grocery market to discuss for this discussion thread.

2. What departments within the market tend to be co-located (adjacent to one another)? Do you believe the co-location is planned? If so why?

3. What departments within the market tend to be distant from one another? What purpose is accomplished by separating these departments so far apart from each other?

4. Why is the layout of the supermarket so important to the overall delivery of the products and services provided?

5. What recommendations would you make to the layout of the supermarket to make the layout more effective or efficient.

Explanation / Answer

The market for these stores would include an incredibly diverse amount of people. Ergo, I will subsidize my categorizations greatly: 1. Near-by residents ---Stay at home moms ---The men of the house i.e. snacks, oil, other ---Commuters 2. Yes, example snack aisles always open into the book/DVD aisle, deli is next to preserved meats( Lunchables etc.) because families go to the deli to get lunches for themselves, and at the same time they have the opportunity to buy alunch for their family. Co-location is planned because it makes it easier for the buyer to buy a product. Ask yourself this, if a carton of milk was all the way on the other side of the store how much of a greater chance would you have of just buying your Oreos without the milk? 3.I think you will get from here on out. 4. Ask a department store manger about this one, because there is a big secret that only they know about this... 5.This one is pretty easy just think through it.
