Question

Calculate the per capita expenditure (amount paid per state resident) for each of the three given line items (higher education, transportation, and total budget) both in 2003 and again in 2014. Record your answers in the table below (or in some similar table) using correct units of measure. Write at least four detailed, quantitative sentences that interpret these results and compare and contrast the changes in per capita spending in these line items over this time period.

Explanation / Answer

From the information given in table 1,
The population of the state of North Dakota in the year 2003 is 631680 and it increases to 739,904 in 2014.

Per-capita expenditure of a parameter(budget line item) is the total amount spend by the state on that parameter divided by population of the state.

For the year 2003,

The per capita expenditure on higher education=230 million dollars/631680 persons=364.108 dollars /person

The per capita expenditure on transportation = 385 million dollars/631680 persons=609.486 dollars/person

Total per capita budget is equal to total budget divided by total population=2496 million dollars/631680 persons=3951.267 dollars/person

For the year 2014,

The per capita expenditure on higher education=567 million dollars/739904 persons=766.32 dollars /person

The per capita expenditure on transportation = 1897 million dollars/739904 persons=2563.846 dollars/person

Total per capita budget is equal to total budget divided by total population=7262 million dollars/739904 persons=9814.787 dollars/person

From the results of the above analysis, we can infer that ,though the per capita expenditure on higher education, transportation as well as the per capita budget increases from 2003 to 2014, this increase is not in proportion with the corresponding increase in the same parameters over the entire population due to an increase in population from 631680 to 739904 between the years.
