Question

Suppose we want to estimate the effects of alcohol consumption (alcohol) on college grade point average (colGPA). In addition to collecting information on grade point averages and alcohol usage, we also obtain attendance information (say, percentage of lectures attended, called attend). A standardized test score (say, SAT) and high school GPA (hsGPA) are also available.

(i) Should we include attend along with alcohol as explanatory variables in a multiple

regression model? (Think about how you would interpret b alcohol.)

(ii) Should SAT and hsGPA be included as explanatory variables? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

i

We can check for the fact a regression or correlation between alcohol consumption and attend,if the correlation is quite high. This tells us that we can neglect attend as a variable, but if it's not then attend must be included because colGPA is dependent on the number of classes he/she attend.

ii

Yes SAT and hsGPA should be included as explanatory variables because they tell us about the overall intelligence of the student. For conducting a study we shouldn't neglect other variables which may affect the dependent variable..For example if a student is not that bright in academics which will be shown in his SAT and hsGPA then alcohol itself cannot be blamed for his low colGPA, this may even lead to statistically denying that alcohol had any effect.
