Question
What are the independent and dependent variables from this experimental design?
Independent Variables:
Dependent Variables:
Experimental Design:Randomized, controlled trial. 120 overweight, hyperlipidemic volunteers received the low-carbohydrate diet or low-fat diet. Intervention for both groups included group meetings, diet instruction, and an exercise recommendation. Group meetings took place at an outpatient research clinic twice monthly for 3 months, then monthly for 3 months. These meetings typically lasted 1 hour and consisted of diet instruction, supportive counseling, questionnaires, and biomedical measurements. During the study, participants selected their own menus.
Explanation / Answer
Random controlled Trials are experiments wherein people are randomly assigned to treatment groups. In this case, 120 overweight hyperlipidemic individuals were given either low carbohydrate or low fat diet.
Independent Variable is the variable that is manipulated by the investigator. The dependent variable is the results obtained from the experiment.
Independent Variable= Treatment condition/ Intervention
Dependent Variable: Outcome Variable or results of study
The independent variable was the type of diet: diet either low in carbohydrate or fat. Diet instruction, and exercise recommendation were also included as they are separate for the two groups. Supportive counseling was given as part of the treatment and will be different in two groups.
The dependent variable is the response to questionnaires and the results of biomedical measurements.
As group meeting were same duration in two groups, I haven’t included them in the independent variable/
