Question
What are the independent and dependent variables in your research hypothesis? How are the variables operationalized in the following propsed study?
The proposed study will narrow in on classical music as well as look at a certain age group where all the participants are undergoing cancer treatments. Fifty participants will be used regardless of gender and they will remain anonymous in the results. The experiment will be conducted at a hospital where individuals receive their chemotherapy and other cancer fighting treatments and they will be selected on a volunteer basis. The experiment will begin with a questionnaire that asks about their current mood and emotions. Each participant will listen to one Classical music song and then they will be given another questionnaire to reevaluate their mood when they have finished listening to the song. This will provide insight to the immediate mood effects a classical song can have on a person with cancer who falls within the age range of 20-25 years of age.
Explanation / Answer
Independent variable (IV)
These are the variables that have direct affect/manipulates/changes the dependent variable i.e Variable the experimenter manipulates (i.e. changes) – assumed to have a direct effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent variable (DV)
These are the variables that are affected by the independent variables i.e. Variable the experimenter measures, after making changes to the IV that are assumed to affect the DV.
Operational variables (or operationalizing definitions)
Refer to how you will define and measure a specific variable as it is used in your study.
Here we are interested in checking if the mood of the patients improve after listening to classical music. Here the mood may be evaluated as an ordinal variable on a scale of 1-5 or 1-10. Another way to consider this is as a binary variable with 0 for all those whose mood has not increased after listening to clasical music and 1 for those whose mood has increased after listening to classical music. Thus the mood improvement is the dependent variable.
The independent variables can be
These independent variables will help us to arrive at a conclusion regarding whether the classical music helps improve the mood of the cancer patients.
