A Patient has been admitted with fever, analysis of their Immunoglobulins and their levels indicated the following: High levels of IgG, high levels of IgA, Maternal IgM, and high levels of IgE. The patient’s fever is continuing to increase and you have to take some form of action.1. How would you evaluate these results and why do you make such evaluation? 2. Based on your evaluation in question 1 what would be your suggested course of action and why? 3. Could you determine the age of the patient explain how could you determine that?

Explanation / Answer

1. this data suggests that the patient is suffering from either a parasitic infection or an infection of the immune system. IgG levels high suggest that the patient is suffering from some kind of infection. But, an increase in IgE suggests that he body is over reacting to some form of allergen. Also, it would mean that the body is trying to fight of an infection coming from a parasite or some immune condition.

2. After the high levels have been established, it has to be examined as to why the fever is increasing and the root cause of high IgE. Hence, an IgE test requires to be done so as to identify the exact cause. If it is an allergen causing this, that would be identified by this test.

3. The age of the patient should be around 3 months of age. This is because there is presence of maternal IgM, present in the blood. This comes from the placenta, and starts dozing off in the infant after 3 months of age.
