Question

These are practice problems that I already did, I just want to make sure that I got the answer right

1. Perception of gravity in plants involves:

a) the sedimentation of the hormone IAA

b) the sedimentation of statoliths (amyloplasts)

c) sensitive root hairs located at tip of the root directs the growth of roots

d) gravity can not be perceived by plants

2. Which of the following statements concerning gravitropism

is not true.

a) Roots show positive gravitropism response.

b) Shoots of a plant grow laterally because of a gravitropism response.

c) Cells detect gravity because of starch grains (statoliths) sink to the

bottom of the cells.

d) A germinating seed placed 2 inches under the soil will

grow upward searching for sunlight.

  3. The blade is removed from the petiole of a leaf on a coleus plant and lanolin or agar

containing an auxin (IAA) is placed on the cut stump of the petiole.

(5 pts)

Results: (2)

Reason: (3)

4-6. Choose the correct response from the list below the statement or question.

  4. Perception of gravity in plants involves:

a) the sedimentation of the hormone IAA

b) the sedimentation of statoliths (amyloplasts)

c) sensitive root hairs located at tip of the root directs the growth of roots

d) gravity can not be perceived by plants

  6. Which of the following statements concerning the effect of ethylene gas

is not true.

a) Exposing this gas to bananas will enhance fruit ripening..

b) Exposing this gas to leaves will cause them to undergo abscission..

c) Exposing this gas to apical meristem will stimulate mitosis.

d) Short days causes leaves to produce ethylene gas which inhibits auxin production.

Explanation / Answer

1. b) the sedimentation of statoliths (amyloplasts)

This is involved in the perception of gravity

2. b) Shoots of a plant grow laterally because of a gravitropism response.

They grow exactly opposite to the gravity, not laterally

3. Result: 1 - Abscision layer will not form and so petiole will not fall off.

Result: 2 - Removing blade increases ethylene production. But if you put on auxin that wont

happen because auxins prevent abscision layers from forming.

4.  b) the sedimentation of statoliths (amyloplasts)

5. b) Shoots of a plant grow laterally because of a gravitropism response.

6. c) Exposing this gas to apical meristem will stimulate mitosis.

This function is done by auxin, not the ethylene
