Question

Researchers conducted a cohort study to examine the association between a diet high in fat and the risk of colon cancer. The researchers believe that vitamin use may be a confounder but they first need to examine whether or not vitamin use is an effect measure modifier. Explanation / Answer

From the figure it it seen that in high fat diet 10.26% have colon cancer.

In non fat diet group the percent of colon cancer is 4 %. So it can be said that high fat diet is a cause of colon cancer.

Now the question is effect of vitamin on protection of colon cancer.

In high fat diet group those who took vitamin the number of patients is 7.6%. The percent increses to 21% for those who dont take vitamin. So it appears that vitamin performs a protective functions in persons with high fat rich diet from colon cancer risk.

In non fat diet people and who take vitamin the number of cc is 5%. However in this group who dont take vitamin the percent is 2. So in non fat diet vitamin does not play much role. So conclusion from this study is vitamin protects high fat diet patient from risk of colon cancer.
