Question
4A. (3pts) One of the following statements is generally accurate, and the other one is not. Please put an "A" next to the accurate statement and provide a supporting example. Please put an "T" next to the inaccurate statement and provide a counter-example. GEF's activate signaling proteins, while GAP's inactivate them. Supporting or counter-example: Kinases activate signaling proteins, while phosphatases inactivate them. Supporting or counter-example: B. (3pts) Do you AGREE or DISAGREE with the following? Please provide your reasoning. The changes that kinases and phosphatases make to proteins are both energetically favorable. AGREE or DISAGREE Reasoning:Explanation / Answer
A)
Accurate GEFs activate signailing molecules whereas GAPs inhibits them. one example is activation of GTPase (RAS superfamily) by GEFs whereas GAPs work antagonistically to GEFs.
Inaccurate kinases and phosphatases may or may not activate/inactivate pathways they work oppositely. in some cases kinases inactivate certain pathways and vice versa.
B) DISAGREE: Kinases require ATP, they transfer gamma P from ATP to substrate for phosphorylation whereas, phosphatases breaks phosphorous group from substrate and do not require ATP, thus only dephosphorylation is energy favorable.
