Complete the information in the footprint calculator.
Answer the following questions honestly based on your ecological footprint calculations in the submission box below (Identify each answer by number); also please attach a dummy, blank file because D2L requires that you attach a file.
1) Report how many Earths it would take if everyone enjoyed your lifestyle. Does this number surprise you? Why? (3 pts)
2) Look at the graph showing the areas of consumption. Describe how your footprint breaks down into categories of resource consumption. Which area was largest? Which area was smallest? (2 pts)
3) Report the number of global acres required to support your lifestyle. (1 pt)
4) Identify an ethical issue that is raised based on your ecological footprint and environmental sustainability. (2 pt)
5) What simple actions can you take to reduce your ecological footprint? Select three actions you could take to reduce your ecological footprint and elaborate on each. (2 pt)
Explanation / Answer
1) It has been suggested that if everyone on the planet consumed as much as the average US citizen, four Earths would be needed to sustain them.
The world's seven billion people consume varying amounts of the planet's resources. Compare the lifestyle of a subsistence farmer with that of a wealthy city-dweller in a developed country. More land is required to grow the city dweller's food, more materials are used to build the city dweller's home and workplace, more energy is required for transport, heating and cooling.
So it's obvious that Americans consume more, on average, than the people of less developed countries. But the claim that four Earths would be needed if everyone lived like Americans is still a striking one.
2) Power generaton consumes more then transportation sector etc
3) Carbon calculators typically calculate the amount of carbon a person is responsible for through their daily activities (in tons).
Global Footprint Network’s Footprint calculator represents the amount of land and sea area needed to provide the resources a person needs (food, shelter, etc.), and absorb their carbon dioxide emissions. The Ecological Footprint is expressed in global hectares, or in global acres for the US calculator.
The carbon component of the Ecological Footprint can be converted to tonnes of carbon with a simple conversion factor (dividing by 2.8 x 105 global hectares, or 691,895 global acres per ton of carbon dioxide per year) for comparison to other measures. However, carbon calculators do not represent the entire Footprint of an individual and cannot be compared directly to a Footprint score.
4) Growth, Employment are the contradictory ethical issue to environmental sustainability. Both cannot go hand in and if greed of the persons still prevails.
5) We start concentrating on Eco-friendly projects, encouraging solar pow walking er generation, wind generation, reducing thermal power plants establishment, using more public transport, saving and conservation of energy
energy efficient practices, using conventional energy and using natural day lights, cycling and walking etc.
