EXERCISE 1.8 Scaling Down Features to Visualize Them Name: Course: Section: Date: (a) The United Kingdom is about 900 km long from north to south. By how many orders of magnitude would you have to (b) Earth's radius is about 6,500 km. Using a compass and ruler, draw a cross section of the Earth in the left-hand box (e) The Moon has a radius of 1,750 km. At the same scale that you used in (a), draw a cross section of the Moon in the (d) Compare the size of the Moon with that of Earth's core, which has a radius of 3,400 km. Which is larger and by scale down a map of the United Kingdom so it would fit on a sheet of paper 20 cm long below, using Point E to locate the center of the Earth. Indicate the scale that you used in the lower left corner of the box. right-hand box below, using Point M to locate the center of the Moon. approximately how much? kmExplanation / Answer
Ans a) 20 cm on map = 900 km on ground
=> 1 cm on map = 45 km on ground
The scale would be 1:4500000
Ans b) We can draw the cross section of Earth by taking radius of 2.5 cm.
Now the scale would be 2.5 cm : 6500 km
=> 1: 260000000
Here the black line which represents 1 cm on map would be equal to 2600 kms.
Ans c) Draw the cross section with 2.5 cm radius.
The scale would be 2.5 cm : 1750 km
=> 1: 70000000
The black line would be equal to 700 kms.
Ans d) The Earth's core is larger. Its radius is larger by (3400-1750)= 1650 kms
