Question

The graph shows the influence of the temperature Ton the maximum sustainable swimming speed S of Coho salmon (cm/s) 20 TO C) 10 20 (a) What is the meaning of the derivative S CD? o s is the maximum sustainable speed of Coho salmon for a given temperature o s is the rate of change of the maximum sustainable speed of Coho salmon with respect to the speed of Coho salmon. O s n is the rate of change of the temperature with respect to the maximum sustainable speed of Coho salmon. S'(T is the rate of change of the maximum sustainable speed of Coho salmon with respect to the temperature. OS'(T is the rate of change of the temperature with respect to the temperature (b) Estimate the values of S (5) and S (25) S (5) (cm/s)/oC (cm/s)/oC (25)

Explanation / Answer

From the graph it appears that S(5)=3 and S(25) =-2 . The important thing is that they do have opposite signs. The first means that at about 5ºC the Coho gains about 3 cm/sec while at 25ºC it loses about 2 cm/sec in maximum sustainable speed.
