The question stars here 1,000 tons of mixed organic wastes need to be disposed of. The organic wastes have an average formula C45H78O20N. 1) To minimize the volume of produced greenhouse gases during disposal, do we select landfill or incineration for disposal of the waste? Why? (Other factors such as disposal costs are not considered during the selection. Methane, if produced, is not used as energy). 2) To minimize the greenhouse effect of the produced greenhouse gases during disposal, does the city choose landfill or incineration? Why? (Other factors such as disposal costs are not considered during the selection. Methane, if produced, is not used as energy; Assume the global warming potential of methane is 25 times as that of carbon dioxide).
Explanation / Answer
Out of incineraion and landfilling, incineration is more appropriate for disposing organic waste. Beacause in case of land filling, if a large amount of waste like 1000 tons is put into the land fill, there will be anaerobic conditions due to lack of oxygen. Because of this, gases like carbon dioxide and methane will be emitted. As we know that the global warming potential is 25 times more than that of carbon dioxide and this methane is not used as a fuel. Which will cause more green house effect.
While in incineration plant, when this organic waste will be burned, the main gases emitted will be carbon dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. As the waste contains only one atom of nitrogen, so the amount of nitrogen oxide will also be reduced. Further, the polluting gases can be trapped using different technologies before they are emitted into the atmosphere like through venturi or gas scrubbers etc.
Thus incineration is more suitable than land filling.
