My Notebook chem tutor Home Insert Draw View XOut Calibri To Do Question Heading 1 A Remember for later A Definition Address Highlight Phone number Paste abe X2 Heading 2 To Do Format B I Sunday, 29 October 20171:45 pm In a study of leaf shape variation in clover, a sample of 50 leaves were measured, with the investigator recording the following for each leaf: Spinel length of the spine running through the leaf (cm), and Area Actual area of the leaf (cma) Area was regressed against Spinel, and a residual plot is shown below (left). A scatter plot for the data is also shown (right). (a) Describe the type of association between Area and Spinel. 1 15 35 -05 15 26 (b) Does the residual plot indicate that a linear regression model would be appropriate for this data? Explain your reasoning Natural logarithnic transformations were applied to one or both variables and residual plots, scatterplots and regression outputs were produced. These are shown below: ) Ln(Area) vs. 25 04 03 02 0.1 02 -03 04 0 5 0.6 0.5 05 05

Explanation / Answer

Solution- (a) As scatter plot suggests higher area with higher spinel then they must be positively correlated.

(b) Residuals must akways be random. Their must be randomness and as residual plots suggests no pattern then linear regression model may be a good fit here.

(c) As value of cofficient of determination (R2) is higher in the exponential model then exponential model may be better ift here.

(d) Equation between Area(Y) and spinel(X) would be-

ln(Y) = .4034 + 1.6094 *X

(e) When X =2 then estimate of Y equals = e^(.4034+1.6094*2)

= 37.4
