Question

6)        Suppose wheat and sugar are two basic ingredients necessary to baketwo items: a loaf of bread and a muffin. A baker has 25 pounds ofwheat and 5 pounds of sugar. To bake each loaf of bread, thebaker needs to use 1.3 pounds of wheat and 0.5 pound ofsugar. To bake each muffin, the baker need needs 0.4 pound ofwheat and 0.16 pound of sugar.

a)        Set up the inequalities representing the baker’s possiblechoices for baking the number of loaves of bread and muffins to useup his available resources (wheat and sugar).

b)        If each loaf of bread is sold for $2.50, and each muffin is soldfor $1.15, define an equation to represent the baker’srevenue function.

Explanation / Answer

a. So, if the baker makes L loavesof bread and M muffins, the amount of wheat and sugar used, inpounds, will be the following:

W = 1.3L + .4M (since he uses1.3 lbs of wheat per loaf of bread and .4 lb permuffin)

S = .5L + .16M

Since you have 25 lbs of wheat and5 lbs of sugar, the set of inequalities would look likethis:

1.3L + .4M < 25 (these should beless than OR EQUAL signs, but they don't exist on mykeyboard)

.5L + .16M < 5

b) If each loaf of bread is soldfor $2.50, and each muffin is sold for $1.15, define an equation torepresent the baker’s revenue function.

I think you're asking for somethingpretty trivial: R = 2.50 L + 1.15M. Or are you askingfor an equation in terms of the amounts of sugar + wheatused? From this question's phrasing, it's not clear tome.
